Budget Crisis Impact on AVUSD

posted Mar 20, 2011 8:07 PM by Jed Snell   [ updated Mar 20, 2011 8:11 PM ]

Governor Brown proposed that the temporary taxes scheduled to sunset be extended for five more years. This would require the issue to be placed on the ballot, and approved by the voters of California. A large portion of the revenues from the tax extensions would help schools avoid further cuts.

Statement from California's Dept. of Pub. Health

Statement from California’s Department of Public Health and Emergency Management Agency on Risk of Radiation Exposure

*The following news release was issued by Cal EMA on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.*

SACRAMENTO – Today the interim director of the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Howard Backer, and acting secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency, Mike Dayton, issued the following statement emphasizing Californians’ safety from radiation exposure and the risks of taking potassium iodide as a precautionary measure.

“The safety of all Californians is our highest priority, and we are in constant contact with the federal agencies responsible for monitoring radiation levels across the West Coast.

We want to emphasize that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have all stated that there is no risk expected to California or its residents as a result of the situation in Japan.

We are actively monitoring the situation in Japan and are ready to take all steps necessary to protect Californians should risks develop.

We urge Californians to not take potassium iodide as a precautionary measure. It is not necessary given the current circumstances in Japan, it can present a danger to people with allergies to iodine, shellfish or who have thyroid problems, and taken inappropriately it can have serious side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte abnormalities and bleeding.

Our thoughts are with the people of Japan at this tragic time.”

Californians with questions about radiation exposure can contact the California Department of Public Health’s Emergency Operations information line at 916 341-3947.

For updated information on monitoring, response and relief efforts in California and Japan, please visit the California Emergency Management Agency website at www.calema.ca.gov.

Test Scores Rising!

Test Scores Continue to Rise in Apple Valley

Our primary purpose is to educate our students to their full potential.  AVUSD continues to show the dedication of our teachers and staff.  When California first adopted the API as a measure of student achievement of the state’s content standards, 800 was the target.  This year we have two schools who have reached the 900 API point category, Rio Vista Elementary and Sycamore Rocks Elementary.

Apple Valley High School grew 67 points last year, taking back the STAR from GHHS.  The STAR was presented at the GHHS vs. AVHS Football game at half-time.  Yucca Loma Elementary grew 52 points and is now our top 800 Club school.  Below is a breakdown of our achieving schools.

900 Club - Rio Vista Elementary and Sycamore Rocks Elementary
800 Club - Yucca Loma Elementary, Sandia Elementary, Vanguard Preparatory, Sitting Bull Academy, Desert Knolls Elementary
700 Club - Rancho Verde Elementary, Mariana Elementary, Apple Valley High School, Granite Hills High School

AVUSD Going Solar

posted Apr 24, 2010 10:13 PM by Jed Snell   [ updated Oct 22, 2010 1:02 PM ]

AVUSD Is Going Solar!

AVUSD has entered into an agreement with a local solar energy provider to install solar energy systems at AVHS, GHHS, and Sitting Bull Academy. The approximate cost of the project will be $12.2 million. The project will be paid with the expected $8.8 million in rebates from Southern California Edison and district funds of $60,560 per month. The current electrical cost per month for these sites is $68,196. The monthly savings of $5,683 equates to an annual savings of $68,196. This fixed rate will also stabilize the energy budget for these sites as rates increase. Once the loan is repaid in 7 - 8  years, all energy generated from the system will be at no cost to the district.
